It’s an undisputable fact of life: kids learn by example. Both positive and negative behaviors are often learned and reinforced by a parent’s example. What better way to teach your child a skill, like piano playing, than by demonstrating it?

Dads have an extra important role to play when motivating kids to learn music. Children who are regularly exposed to music in the home are more likely to grow up musical. Kids with parents who actually play an instrument (like piano) have an even further edge.

Dad’s role is especially important when it comes to raising a budding pianist. Young children in particular look to their fathers as role models. They see Dad as omniscient, Herculean and heroic. Kids are natural imitators and will readily and willingly engage in an activity that Dad portrays as cool or fun.

Mothers, of course, can play a significant role in helping kids get excited about piano playing. The downside of having a mother who is musical when Dad isn’t is that it can send mixed messages. Children may view piano playing as a “girl” activity, at least at home.

Motivating a child to practice regularly is a chore at the best of times. Children are often even less excited about practicing when they know that their parents don’t play. It’s tough for kids to see the value in a musical education under these circumstances.

Dads can make a difference in the musical education of their children even if they’ve never played piano before. It’s never too late to learn something new. You might not become a virtuoso, but that’s not the point. The point is to show your child that piano playing is a valuable life skill.

Dads who haven’t previously taken piano lessons can get started by doing one or more of the following:

* Taking a parent/child piano class. Some music schools offer parent/child piano lessons. Many are actually founded on the philosophy that children learn best through active parent participation. Parent/child classes teach basic musical skills but also foster healthy interaction between parent and child. Plus, dads who never took piano lessons get to learn right along with their children.

* Take a self-tutorial. Piano tutorials are available in workbook and DVD form as well as online. Tutorials are self-directed and cover the basics like note reading and chords. Find an instructor who understands what your goal is: to lead your child by example. Your instructor can design a lesson plan that helps meet those needs without scaring you with long-winded classical pieces. He or she can teach you the basics and give you a great foundation for piano playing for and with your child.

Dads who master the basics of piano playing have another advantage that non-musical dads don’t. Pianist fathers have one more way to encourage kids to turn off the television and engage in something productive and beneficial. Impromptu family concerts, father/child duets or simply making up goofy songs together fosters relaxation, bonding and emotional health.

Having perfect six pack abs has been the goal of many people for years. Think Johnny Weissmuller back in the 20’s and 30’s. Countless Women and Men have strived to do it. Many have failed. The majority of bonsai artists stick with the more common deciduous, confierous, or fruit trees when creating their bonsai tree collection.  But, more exotic bonsai varieties are available that permit the bonsai artist to enhance his or her skills.

An excellent alternative to the classical bonsai is Wisteria, a native of China, Korea and Japan.  In the wild, Wisteria can reach 30 feet or more in size.  However, because Wisteria doesn’t conform to any of the normal bonsai styles, forming them into a bonsai can be an interesting challenge.

The Wisteria flowers are both beautiful and aromatic and come in a variety of colors, including pink, purple, blue, and white.  Flowering in the Spring, they need lots of water with adequate drainage and they do well in partial shade to full sun.  Just before they bloom in the spring, you should provide them with ample fertilizer, and once again in late summer before they shed their leaves.

Another alternative is Orange Jasmine which will provide a delight to the nose and beauty to the eye.  Orange Jasmine bears a bright red fruit and fragrant, white blossoms.

Feed Orange Jasmine every three to four weeks starting in early spring and continuing through mid-autumn.  Only light watering is sufficient for most of the year, with slightly more required in the hotter summer season.

Because they generally do better in moderate shade or filtered sun, Orange Jasmine is one of the few bonsai that can, and should be cultivated indoors.

The Mimosa tree, also occasionally known as silk trees due to their long silky filaments, offer another good choice.  They are as fragrant as both of the two choices mentioned above and their puffy flowers and lacy foliage are also quite lovely.

The Mimosa’s flowers bloom in late April to early July and moderate water should be provided during the blooming season.  However, you should avoid getting water on the flowers because, much like a number of other flowering plants, the flowers will quickly deteriorate when wet.

If you choose to cultivate a Mimosa, it will be one of the larger bonsai in your collection since they have large leaves, grow rapidly, and are difficult to maintain at a very small size.  So be sure to give then adequate room in your display area.

Another non-traditional bonsai is the Desert Rose.  The Desert Rose can turn what would be an ordinary bonsai collection into one full of color and excitement.  It is a native of East Africa and in the wild can grow up to 10 feet tall, producing large, pink, trumpet-bowl flowers.

The Desert Rose should be kept outside most of the year as they need plenty of sunshine and lots of fresh air.  With their very bushy growing habit, they will make a good design complement to the many traditional bonsai in your collection.

However, the Desert Rose is sensitive to cold, so they should be brought indoors in cold climates or during periods of cold weather as they will not thrive in temperatures below 10C (50F).  With temperatures in the 10C-15C (50F-60F) range, they will lie dormant and healthy and during this period they will require very little water.

You should try your hand at some of these exotic fragrant and beautiful flowering plants to extend your horizon and further develop your bonsai gardening skills. They provide a nice contrast when placed among some of the more standard evergreens, such as, junipers, pines, and firs.  Additionally, as they drop their leaves in the fall and blossom in the spring, you’ll have an interesting ever-changing display.

Sadly, Havana’s Diva-like splendour is being chipped away by the ravages of time. UNESCO has declared old Havana a world heritage site and funds begin to flow into projects all over the city, but work has only just started.

Havana is a grid-plan city, making it easy to navigate its broad avenues and side streets, originally lined with splendid churches and mansions of the city’s former aristocracy. They have suffered greatly from neglect, and many are now crumbling and decrepit.

For three hundred years, urban life in the Cuban capital took place intramuros, or “within the city walls”. Then, in the early nineteenth century, a building boom began. Havana’s city walls were pulled down to facilitate city planning and road building between the old Intramuros Plaza and the newer Extramuros Plaza.

Gateway to the New World

The city of Havana was founded in 1515 where the Cuban capital stands today. Its naturally protected harbour began operation slightly later, in 1519. Havana’s central Caribbean location was a boon to the city’s development.

All the important trade routes to and from Mexico and Peru passed through here. Havana was named the capital of the Cuban colony in 1607 and unofficially proclaimed the gateway to the New World. Although its population would remain in check for a century or more, its progress as a commercial and political centre was continuous and uninterrupted.

Hemingway’s Cuba

In the early twentieth century, American Prohibition brought tourism of a sort to Havana for the first time.

The Caribbean metropolis, especially the Vedado district, where the 142-metre tall memorial to national hero Jose Marti stands, became a jet set stomping ground where everyone could enjoy a bottle of rum, an aromatic cigar and a little salsa dancing.

Ernest Hemingway was drawn to Havana, and many of his novels were written here. He was locally famous for downing a glass or two and smoking a thick Havana cigar. The long Cuban party ended on New Year’s Eve in 1959, when rebels under the command of Fidel Castro marched into the city.

There are still night clubs in, modern-day Havana, once again attracting thousands of visitors. La Habana Vieja (Old Havana) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Some of its loveliest buildings were converted into museums. Visitors looking for culture will find that the city has churches, palaces, castles, monuments and markets.

Cathedral Plaza is a popular attraction and one of the most beautiful squares in the city. The steeples of the Cathedral of San Cristobal de La Habana dominate the look of the square. Not far from the square is the 1588 Real Fuerza Castle, the oldest surviving colonial fortress in the New World. The Plaza de las Armas, its streets lined with swaying royal palms, has been the Cuban centre of power and government for four hundred years. The majestic Capitanes Generales Palace, home of the National Museum, is on the west side of this plaza. It is one of the grandest buildings in Cuba.

Hand-Rolled Cigars

Central Havana functioned as the red light district of the city prior to the Revolution; currently one might rather say it glows in pale pastels. Visitors tend to avoid this area as a rule, most preferring to stick to the comforts of the Vedado district and the famous attractions of Old Havana. There is nevertheless a great deal to see in central Havana. The district is dominated by the monumental El Capitolio Nacional, built as a more ornate twin of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. as if to mock capitalism.

Havana’s oldest cigar factory is located on the west side of the Capitolia. The approximately 400 people employed here continue to roll cigars the old-fashioned way, by hand.

The characters are all intricate and interesting in their own way. Just as Disney did when it created it’s characters starting with Mickey Mouse, Nintendo has expanded it’s characters from the Mario series all the way back to the Mario 64 days and even earlier. These characters are timeless.

Chose your own cart or bike with details from speed, weight, acceleration, handling, drift, off road mini turbo, wheels, rims, and tires differ per vehicle. Manual or Automatic Drift are also options, like in Too Fast Too Furious Tokyo Drift with Nitrous boosters.

Once you have chosen your car and your character it is time to pick the race you wish to run. Chose your circuit racetracks from new and old tracks, some are from Gameboy, Super Nintendo, Game Cube, Nintendo DS, and of course new tracks designed specifically for the Wii. Each of these circuits shows a map of the track on the right hand of the screen. Don’t watch that too close though or the obstacles may wipe you out. These obstacles include but are not limited to 18 wheelers and stars not to mention there is always the risk of just running off the track. These circuits each have 3 levels of difficulty beginner, medium, and expert.

You can complete the circuits for trophies and even get grades on how well you whomp the completion. This grade allows you to unlock more characters, vehicles, and options. In other words, winning is not the only purpose in this game. There are so many more facets that just what place you finish the race.

You are not resigned to be a solo player on this either. You can also play as a team. As with any real racing group, just look at Karters of America Racing Triad and how everyone while in competition works together. Join a team and compete together. Work together to achieve your goals. Or you can battle for balloons or coins, a form of go karting reminiscent to the old game of combat. Possibilities are endless, and looks like the only thing you can’t do is to make money online.

Over all I think the only group who really dislikes the Wii’s would be Washington Internship Institute, for making its name the same as the Institute’s acronym. Or maybe by this time they have resigned themselves to it and appreciate the recognition they get every time someone looks for the Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel Wii Game.
